When You’re Too Tired to Use the Tools That Would Help

Hey y'all,

I'll make this quick.

As I've been meeting with my coaching clients lately, there's a pattern that keeps emerging. Maybe you'll recognize it too.

In response to my asking clients who or what could be helpful given some of their current challenges, they share things like meditation, therapy, meds, connection with friends and family, etc. It's often quickly followed up by, "But I just don't have time."

It's application season for some. Busy "end of year wrapping up" for many businesses. Semester's ending, so cue the exam prep and grading. The political climate is heavy. Winter's coming. And everyone is tired.

I get it. When you're barely keeping your head above water, adding one more thing feels impossible.

But here's what I'm noticing: without those tools, without the pause, without the rest, people aren't actually doing all they want to do anyway. The exhaustion catches up. The overwhelm takes over. That unchecked urgency has folks either crashing out or unconsciously operating outside their values, creating more harm than good.

So here's my gentle encouragement: Use ALL your resources, especially when it feels like you don't have time.

  • Ten minutes of breathing exercises before you get out of bed.

  • That therapy session you've been postponing.

  • The walk that clears your head.

  • A meal with someone who fills your cup.

  • Five minutes of doodling at day's end.

That time isn't wasted - it's essential. Particularly in seasons like this when we're navigating seasonal depression, political mistrust, and the weight of just... everything.

Here’s why: Your brain wasn't designed for constant output. When you're stressed, your nervous system stays in fight-or-flight mode, which means the parts of your brain responsible for strategic thinking, empathy, and good decision-making literally go offline. Those pauses - the breathing, the walk, the connection - aren't breaks from your work. They're what reset your nervous system so you can actually think clearly, lead effectively, and show up as your best self. Without them, you're asking yourself to run a marathon on a sprained ankle and wondering why you're not hitting your stride. It doesn't work.

Rest isn't selfish.

The pause isn't wasted time.

Your wellness isn't negotiable - especially now.

Be gentle with yourself,

Tamisha
